PTA welding demands consistent heat control, precision torch positioning, and uniform deposition to achieve the desired wear protection. The Yaskawa Motoman excels in these areas, delivering exact and repeatable results that manual welding simply can’t match.
Wenzel Industries continues to invest in cutting-edge manufacturing technology with the addition of a second Yaskawa Motoman robotic welder to its machine shop. This floor-mounted robotic welding system is designed specifically for precision Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) welding of tungsten carbide—a critical step in producing the industry-leading tungsten carbide armoured radial flow bearings (aka flow restrictors) used inside Wenzel’s downhole drilling motors.

Doubling down on precision and performance

The new Yaskawa Motoman robotic welder isn’t just another piece of equipment—it’s an advanced automation solution that ensures every tungsten carbide weld is executed with absolute accuracy. PTA welding demands consistent heat control, precision torch positioning, and uniform deposition to achieve the desired wear protection. The Yaskawa Motoman excels in these areas, delivering exact and repeatable results that manual welding simply can’t match. By adding a second unit, Wenzel has effectively doubled its capacity while maintaining its exacting quality standards.

  1. Consistent quality – The robotic arm operates with micron-level accuracy, ensuring tungsten carbide is deposited exactly where it’s needed, every single time. This results in a uniform protective layer that withstands extreme abrasion.
  2. Increased productivity – With two robotic welders running, production throughput is significantly higher. This allows Wenzel to meet customer demand more efficiently while keeping lead times competitive.
  3. Enhanced safety – PTA welding involves intense heat and high-intensity arcs. By automating the process, operators remain safely out of harm’s way, reducing workplace hazards while still overseeing the process.
  4. Reduced downtime – Automation means less variation and fewer reworks. The robots can operate continuously, optimizing uptime and ensuring schedules are met without compromise.

Raising the bar for tungsten carbide armoured components

In the harsh conditions of downhole drilling, every component must perform flawlessly under extreme wear. Flow restrictors are often the most vulnerable part in a drilling motor due to erosion and abrasion caused by high-velocity drilling fluids and abrasive solids that passes through them. Wenzel’s tungsten carbide armoured flow restrictors are engineered and manufactured to withstand the abuse so drillers can run longer, deeper with full confidence. By using PTA welding with the Yaskawa Motoman, tungsten carbide is metallurgically bonded to the base metal around carefully installed pure-tungsten tiles. This creates a surface layer with exceptional hardness and durability, resulting in a component that can withstand extended drilling runs without premature wear—a major advantage for operators looking to minimize maintenance costs and downtime.

Investing in the future of manufacturing

The decision to add a second Yaskawa Motoman robotic welder is part of Wenzel Industries’ long-term strategy to stay at the forefront of manufacturing innovation. It reflects the company’s commitment to precision engineering, workplace safety, and delivering the highest quality downhole drilling tools on the market. Whether it’s achieving flawless tungsten carbide PTA welds, improving throughput, or protecting its workforce, Wenzel is making smart investments that keep its products—and its customers—ahead of the competition.
