Our customers tell us that when running Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS), the benefits of smooth and precise drilling can be met with higher operating costs and higher lost-in-hole exposure. They’ve also told us that RSS drilling requires a steady, controlled flow of drilling fluid to achieve an efficient ROP.
So, we took this feedback and designed a motor specifically for RSS applications.

Asset protection
To protect you from the potential loss of expensive RSS assets, we’ve reinforced this motor with cold-rolled threads, incredibly tough components and more tungsten carbide than we’ve ever packed into a motor. We have also added an integral catch mechanism to help you out of worst-case jams.

Optimal fluid bypass
Typical mud-lubricated motors start a run with 5% bypass, which can increase to 15% or more by the end of the run. This loss of effective flow at the RSS can severely affect its performance and functionality, further amplified in flow control situations.
With the WZL Matador, you get optimized fluid bypass for the duration of your run. By maintaining a consistent rate of fluid, the RSS achieves expected pad force and predictable, high-performance directional control that leads to higher effective ROP and a better wellbore.
