Recently, the Wenzel Industries line of spiral stabilizers has been earning rave reviews from operators in the field. Across a wide range of drilling conditions, our stabilizers have proven they can withstand high-performance drilling over multiple runs, all while delivering impressive gains in hole cleaning efficiency and drag reduction.
Feedback we are receiving indicates that our spiral stabilizers don’t just meet expectations—they exceed them. Customers report smoother drilling, better wellbore quality, and reduced wear on the overall BHA, translating directly into lower operating costs and improved drilling efficiency. In an environment where downtime and inefficiency carry significant consequences, that kind of reliability represents exceptional value.
The new redesign is very durable and showed a big reduction in hole drag with increased hole cleaning. Great product.
Built to Perform Under Demanding Conditions
We have designed our spiral stabilizers with real-world drilling challenges in mind. From design and material selection to machining and hardfacing, every detail is engineered to hold up under aggressive drilling parameters, limit repairs and deliver results. Our stabilizer maintains gauge, resists premature wear and continues to perform consistently after repeated runs downhole as well—or better than—any other stabilizer on the market.
Tungsten Carbide Hardfacing
A key reason our spiral stabilizers continue to perform run after run is the tungsten carbide hardfacing applied to each stabilizer blade. We apply the tungsten carbide matrix using robotic plasma transfer arc (PTA) welding equipment to ensure a highly controlled, repeatable, and metallurgically sound bond between the hardfacing material and base steel. Unlike manual or less precise welding methods, robotic PTA welding allows for consistent bead geometry, optimal carbide distribution, and minimal dilution—factors that directly impact wear life and reliability. The result is a stabilizer blade that maintains gauge longer, resists erosion, and continues to deliver effective hole cleaning and drag reduction over multiple drilling runs.
But don’t mistake the robot-assisted process as an easy one. The twisted spiral shape of our stabilizers require complex programming to ensure the robotic welder accurately follows the curve and bend of each blade. It takes highly trained technicians and some trial and error to get this done right.
Some of our clients prefer to have a smooth finished edge to their stabilizers, while others are ok with the tightly welded beads as they come out of the PTA bay. Regardless, both designs are finished to remove any overhanging bead that could get caught as the stabilizers spins downhole, and both designs deliver exceptional performance. This durability gives operators confidence to push performance without sacrificing tool life. Instead of frequent replacements or unexpected failures, Wenzel stabilizers are built to push forward.
Optimized Shape
Spiral stabilizers are downhole tools installed in the bottom-hole assembly (BHA) to help centralize the drill string, maintain wellbore stability and control directional tendencies. Unlike straight-blade designs, spiral stabilizers feature helical blades that create a gradual contact with the wellbore. The spiral geometry also delivers other benefits:
-
Improved hole cleaning that promotes consistent fluid flow and efficiently drives drill cuttings out of the hole
-
Reduced drag and torque that helps drilling assemblies move more smoothly through the wellbore
-
Enhanced wellbore quality with fewer ledges, less spiraling and unwanted deviation
-
Less vibration and shock on the BHA, contributing to longer life for drilling tools and components
For operators focused on maximizing rate of penetration while protecting equipment and optimizing hole quality, spiral stabilizers play a critical role in overall drilling performance.
Our stabilizers just happen to be better than others.
